What is Project Based Learning (PBL)?

PBL is a teaching method through which students learn by actively engaging in a real-world and personally meaningful projects. Children ask their own questions, conduct their own investigations, and make decisions about their activities with guided learning through hands-on investigations, exploration, and constructing solutions.

Features of PBL:

Project Timeline: Lasts an extended period of time (usually 3 to 4 months)
Holistic: Engages social/emotional, physical, and intellectual aspects, and integrates other subjects Skills: Fosters problem-solving, critical thinking, empathy, creativity, communication, self-direction and reflection

The 4 Steps of PBL:

Topic Selection: Choose project through student’s interests, experiences, and questions.
Investigation: Hands-on research to answer a question through a variety of resources such as field studies, experts, books/media and observation/experiments. Culmination: Summarize and display knowledge and skills acquired. Reflection: Review project and assess achievement of goals.
